Gilliss and brothers, Stephen Gilliss, Michael Gilliss, and William Gilliss II, and sister Dianne Gilliss.Jay moved to Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 10 in 1971 with his parents, brother Don, and sister. While growing up, he was close with his good friends and neighbors Wayne and Jimmy Weigold, hanging out riding motorcycles and eventually partying.Jay had many talents and was dedicated to his work. After attending high school at Moon Valley HS, Jay moved back to the East Coast and became a sword fisherman with his brother Sean. He also filled in doing carpentry work, drywall, and plastering to name a few things he worked on. He then welcomed the opportunity to work with another brother Michael at the Gloucester Cape Ann Marina working on repairs at the hotel, maintaining the pool and repairing and painting boats. He certainly was a jack of all trades! These skills landed him a job at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem where he made a 22-year career as an Engineer Technician and eventually the Chief Engineer position for the hotel.Jay was very passionate about his job and took great pride in his work and loved working for the hotel. He was very professional, meticulous, and devoted to his work, always giving 100%. He is respected and appreciated by both the people he worked with and worked for. When not working, Jay enjoyed riding his Harley Fat Boy, sometimes traveling to Alton Bay Lakes, New Hampshire, to ride around in the mountains and relax. In his earlier years, he enjoyed taking his boat out and fishing on the Annisquam River. He loved the water. When he vacationed in Phoenix, Arizona, he enjoyed visiting family. Many times, while out visiting, he would rent a motorcycle and take a ride with his brothers Don, Ted, and friend Wayne traveling up to Northern Arizona. He also enjoyed camping, riding quads, and shooting guns for target practice. Jay loved the heat in Arizona and Florida, and you could find him laying out by the pool or laying out at the beach. At home, Jay's favorite TV shows were the Mecum Car Auctions and westerns.Jay had several medical battles and we often called him the bionic man with surgeries for his shoulder, hip, and several back surgeries. Jay's final battle with lung cancer, was his toughest battle and he fought hard right up to the end with a positive attitude and sense of humor. We would like to thank the oncology medical staff at Beverly Hospital for their constant care throughout the duration of his illness and for keeping him comfortable during his passing. He passed with a lot of pride and dignity. He will be greatly missed by his family, dear friend Megan Campbell, and all who knew him. We love you Jay... RICHARD BUCKLEY, LEGENDARY MINIMALIST ARTIST AND PEACE ACTIVIST DIES. - Richard Warren Buckley, who died peacefully in his home on the North Shore of Massachusetts, Sunday, May 12th, at the age of 87, became known as one of the country's most iconic and influential artists during his storied life.Buckley, whose remarkable career evolved from realismand surrealism to minimalism was known for seeking the essence of his subjects by minimizing the physical aspects of their core energy. His thought-provoking work received critical acclaim in galleries throughout Europe and the United States including The White House Gallery in Washington D.C.In a recent interview, Buckley said, "Over the past 40 years, my work has evolved from representational oils on canvas to a minimalist technique utilizing primarily bold black strokes and a small red dot on a white background." Buckley also spoke about the progress of his work, stating: "I'm often asked about the significance of the red dot; it symbolizes the core energy fueling the essence. My current art is the product of decades of releasing, of letting things go as I attempt to transcend intellect, education, and the expectations of others." Buckley often commented that he found a spiritual connection with nature as he painted and added color to his work in the past 5 years. At the age of 18, Buckley enrolled in the US Army infantry, reaching the rank of Master Sergeant by 1963. Although seemingly, like his art, a remarkable evolution took place. Now married and a father of two young children, working as a creative director at a Boston advertising agency, he found himself troubled deeply by the escalating loss of life in the war in Vietnam. Buckley beganattending underground events led by anti-war activist Abbie Hoffman and forged ties with the Marxist-Leninist group: The Black Panthers. His activist work during this period was fierce and thought-provoking. With his Nikon 35mm in hand, he photographed a plethora of anti-Vietnam war demonstrations between 1968 and 1972. His haunting sculpture of a "Soldiers Grave" was deployed countless times by students as ananthemic symbol against clashing riot police. Becoming more and more disenchanted with classic American suburbia "white picket fence culture" and its trappings, Buckley resigned from his well-paying job and uprooted his family on a wild, hallucinogen-infused journey. He and his wife, Joan, along with his handful of students, built a farmhouse deep in the NH wilderness which would be affectionately called "The Snake Farm". The family would live off the land and be self-sustaining. It was a time of great introspection and self-reflection in Buckley's artistic life. During the 1980s, meditation grew to become the core of Buckley's existence. It came after a turbulent affair with alcohol, which became part of his lifestyle when he worked in marketing as a young man. "Beefeater martinis were big in Boston," and Buckley found that abstinence and meditation were critical to his creative process. If he didn't meditate enough, his work suffered. "I meditate several times a day," he said, "I can meditate in 30 seconds." He first became interested in meditation in high school when he would watch Alan Watts' The Way of Zen on TV after football practice. Watts proposed that Buddhism was a form of psychotherapy and separate from religion. Buckley made a similar discovery in his 40s when he went on a spiritualretreat and realized that spirituality didn't have to be religious. Consequently, his life changed."We all have it within us, the problem is accessing it," he said. "To me, the idea is just openness." Buckley described a Walt Whitmanian experience in which he was looking at a dewdrop on a clover leaf, and realized through its attachment to the ground, to the earth, and then to the universe, that everything was connected: "It's a sense of oneness," he said, "I have the knowledge that in this life, we consume plants. In the next life, plants consume us." This belief in achieving "oneness" led Buckley to bring his enlightenment onto the international stage. Using his unique creativity in 1989, he worked to free the imprisoned students of the pro-democracy movement in Tiananmen Square in Beijing China. His striking sculptural work and writings earned him a US Senate Commendation.Throughout his life, his love of children, not just his own, was apparent. But never more apparent when at the age of 86 with fading health, he painted day and night in an effort to raise tens of thousands of dollars to fight cancer in children for Pediatric Oncology at Mass General Hospital. In what would be his final press interview, Buckley studied the wall of his studio, wistfully perusing 50 years of photos and paintings that adorned it. His eyes fell on "Dance Two," a painting where a ballerina was performing a grand jete under a string of red dots, or lights. "I know when a painting is done when it makes me smile," Buckley said. "Every time I do these dancers, I start smiling before I'm done. It just feels right."It seems, without question, as we bid our tearful farewell to Richard Warren Buckley, he did life right. Richard was raised in Arlington, MA by Mary Genevive (Jeanne) and John J. Buckley. His father passed away when he was 11 and he grew up in the company of his loving cousins, Linda Corely Gaunt, Carol Lerario, Kristie Huber, and Donna Dunkin. He graduated from Arlington High School and attended Northeastern University, the Vesper George School of Art, The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and Harvard University. He received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Oxford University.Richard leaves behind his loving children, Diana and Bryan Buckley, and his 8 grandchildren, Marina, John, Summer, Celine, Ty, Sierra, Liam, and Kara- and his legacy, which will live on to inspire others.Dick loved children and family and over the past several years he was actively involved in fundraising for the care of children and families affected by cancer at MGH Pediatric Oncology.A celebration of his life is planned for June 15th at 11:30 a.m. at Crocker Park, Marblehead, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Dick Buckley to the Massachusetts General Hospital. Donations for the Department of Pediatric Oncology may be made online at giving.massgeneral.org, or checks can be mailed to: Massachusetts General Hospital Development Office 125 Nashua Street, Suite 540 Boston, MA 02114.
