Why study in Norwich?
Norwich is a great city to be a student, full of creativity and culture and it’s just two hours from London. Named one of the best places to live in the UK (Sunday Times), it offers an array of festivals, street markets, and historical attractions. There’s also great nightlife, shopping, and restaurants.
About Norwich
A quaint and quintessentially English city, Norwich is asafe and welcoming placefor students. Situated in the East of England in the county of Norfolk, the city is surrounded by beautiful countryside.
UNESCO named Norwich England's first City of Literature in 2012 in celebration of the city's literary tradition, including Booker and Nobel prize winners.
University of East Anglia UEA
University of East Anglia (UEA) is set in acres of parkland on the outskirts of Norwich. UEA has consistently ranked in the top 30 UK universities in our league tables since 2017.
Location
UEA students are guaranteed a room on campus in their first year, subject to a few restrictions and conditions, with on-campus or city centre accommodation options just a 20-minute bus ride from campus.
Facilities
UEA's library is open 24/7 and supplies IT facilities, social and quiet areas, and a laptop loan scheme. Resources include over 800,000 books and journals, as well as an online library catalogue, databases, and e-journals.
Help is on hand for personal problems, financial worries, wellbeing, and more general support when studying at university. Supplying all your needs on campus are shops, bars and cafes, a launderette and a post office. To keep body and soul in good health, there's also anNHS GP practice and university dental service, apharmacy, multifaith centre, and a sports centre.

Norwich University of the Arts (NUA)
Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) is a specialist arts, architecture, design and media university, with strong links with industry and an emphasis on employability.
Location
NUA’s campus is in the heart of the creative quarter of Norwich, with a flourishing music and cultural scene. A wide range of accommodation is available to suit all budgets. All accommodation at NUA is self-catered and in a central location. The accommodation team run sessions to talk about private accommodation in the city and have lists of approved landlords each year.
Facilities
NUA is home to one of the largest specialist art, design, architecture and media library collections in the East of England. Students have access to study spaces, computers and a social learning space, as well as over 38,000 books and a large DVD collection.
The East Gallery is the university's city-centre gallery space, featuring NUA exhibitions or collaborations with national and international partners such as the Jerwood Prize, the Hayward Gallery and the Arts Council.
There’s also a campus shop with an extensive range of art and stationery at competitive prices. The campus cafe offers students a range of hot and cold drinks, plus affordable snacks and lunches.

Living in Norwich
Both UEA and NUA are campus universities with lively and inclusive student communities. NUA is based in the city centre and UEA is just a 20-minute bus journey from town.
In your first year of university, many students choose to live in halls to meet new people and immerse themselves in the university experience. Both universities offer accommodation either near or on campus, perfect for popping out to a lecture and making the most of the amenities.

Getting around Norwich
Norwich is the perfect city to explore on foot or by bike. However, getting the bus is also an easy way to get around. This is a great way to see other parts of the city and head further afield.
Train
Norwich is well connected to other parts of the UK. You can hop on a train to London Liverpool Street in about two hours. Regular services also run to Sheffield, Nottingham, Cambridge and Manchester.
Bus
If studying at UEA, you might need to get the bus into town unless you choose to cycle. Otherwise, it’s a 45-minute walk. Luckily, buses run regularly and take just 20 minutes to get into the city centre from campus.
Cycle
Cycling is a great way to get around Norwich while enjoying the beautiful scenery. Admire the cobbled streets, famous lanes and medieval architecture, all before your first lecture of the day.
You can also find Beryl bikes and e-scooters dotted around the city, ready for use whenever you need them.
Things to do in Norwich
Norwich has been voted the best place to live in the East of England (Sunday Times 2022). This medieval city is steeped in history and beautiful architecture as well as trendy cafes, street markets and vintage shops.
Food and drink
Norwich is a great spot for foodies. From vegan kebabs and artisan gelato to quirky cafes and cuisines to suit every taste, Norwich offers a range of eating experiences. There’s Blue Joanna, an Asian restaurant with live music every night and stacks of vinyl records, and Moorish Falafel Bar, a BYOB cafe that sells delicious veggie food and offers its space as a free gallery for artists.
Eating and drinking in Norwich is perfect for students as there are so many affordable options that don’t compromise on taste. Why not head to Jive Kitchen for tacos and tequila or Grosvenor Fish Bar for ‘Seven Quid Squid’.
Nightlife
Norwich has a buzzing nightlife, particularly because it'ssuch a student city. Whether you like going to gigs, co*cktail bars, theatres or nightclubs, there's something for everyone. A popular drinking hole is the Bowling House, a co*cktail bar where you can do karaoke, grab a bite to eat and score some strikes.
Many of Norwich’s best bars and night clubs can be found on or near to Prince of Wales Road such as The Loft, an LGBT+ venue, Mojos, and Gonzo’s Tea Room. Other hotspots include Karma Kafe, a nightclub set across three floors and The Waterfront, a club run by the UEA Students’ Union.
Arts and culture
Norwich has become a prominent arts and culture hub.
A number of independent theatres stage shows from opera to ballet, comedy, live gigs or West-End performances. There are several museums and galleries as well as the world-renowned Sainsbury Centre for visual arts, foundat the UEA campus. Here, you can also visit the sculpture park to see work by Anthony Gormley, Picasso and Francis Bacon.
Cementing its status asthe UK’s first UNESCO City of Literature, budding literature fans can head to the National Centre for Writing which hosts workshops, festivals and courses.
Shopping
Norwich is also a major shopping destination in the UK, with everything from unique stores to high street favourites. Home to department stores and numerous independent retailers, Norwich is a haven for keen shoppers. There’s also a street market open six days a week where you can browse jewellery, clothes, flowers and delicious local food.
As a student on a tight budget, you may not have the cash to splash out at the high-end boutiques – but you can find vintage and second-hand clothing stores such as Taxi Vintage and Slayyy Vintage.
